What Is GOTS Certification and Why Does It Matter?

The Global Organic Textile Standard is the gold standard for organic fibers. Here's what it covers and why you should look for it.

GOTS stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard. It is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, backed by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.

When you see the GOTS label on clothing, bedding, or personal care products, it means the item contains at least 70% certified organic natural fibers. For the highest GOTS grade, the product must contain at least 95% certified organic fibers.

But GOTS goes beyond just the fiber content. It also sets strict environmental and social criteria for every step of production: from harvesting the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing, to labeling.

Key requirements include: prohibition of toxic heavy metals, aromatic solvents, GMOs, and nanoparticles in GOTS goods; strict wastewater treatment requirements for wet processing units; and compliance with key norms of the International Labour Organization.

Not all 'organic' textile claims are equal. Some brands use organic cotton but process it with harsh chemicals. GOTS ensures the entire chain — from farm to finished product — meets rigorous standards.
